What is Crypto Mining Difficulty and How it Impacts YOUR Profits - Explained W/ BTC ZenCash ZEC

693 ratings | 13004 views
What is crypto mining difficulty, how is it adjusted, what is the point of a block time? Vosk explains how the difficulty for mining a block reward is adjusted when mining Bitcoin on sha-256 or ZenCash/Zcash on Equihash. It is important to understand mining difficulty to ensure you are maximizing your mining profits! Sorry if asked before: what headset are you using? I am amazed at the mic quality for a wireless headset :) Thanks for the great vid. I mined Zen since June last year (kudos to you for pointing to towards this awesome project) and I am happy that I could secure a bunch of secure nodes. Difficulty is really too high for me to further mine Zen at the moment :/

Great video brother, Question - your thoughts on mining BTCPrivate? as it will be Equihash from what I understand as per ZCL is, if we get in early? I'm in Australia where power costs are high! However i'm a passionate miner with 6 x 1070's rig and i'm not giving up as coin value's convert from USD to AUD in a way that still has me infront. Thanks in advance and any other knowledge bombs or any other advice would be appreciated. Cheers, T

It would be great if you made some videos discussing what you think are some great newcomer coins we should try mining. I know it would be totally speculative, but it would be fun to see where that goes.
rlvtrader (3 months ago)
Have you tried different equihash miiners like bminer or dstm? I'm seeing a nice increase over ewbf's miner. Also what coins are you mining outside of zencash. Have you tried mining btcp?
rlvtrader (3 months ago)
Thanks for that info. I never heard of zminer, but i will stay away.
Neil Sumner (3 months ago)
rlvtrader don't use zminer, I got caught out there, nothing too tragic, reinstalled everything now but it hijacked my CPU probably for monero. it does other stuff too, you may be more susceptible on windows idk. I am amazed zminer is still on github, that's what caught me out the best way is not to use anything not open source that you didn't compile yourself.. having a serious think about making my own mining LFS (Linux from scratch there's a website) as for cuda optimised equihash, might have a bash one day. bminer and the rest have done it, why not? as for whoever made zminer.....😈

I'll never give a Dislike someone who's talking based on his/her own experience, even when I disagree what they say haha... In this case Drew, you didn't mention the new Nvidia graphic cards and for sure the ATI ones are going to be at the market in the next 2 or 3 months, at that time miners will start to use them (if they produce more hashes at a reasonable card price) and all of us (using older cards) will bite the dust. That's what I referred in your last video when I said you missed to mention the difficulty issue about building rigs in this moment. Best regards
Neil Sumner (3 months ago)
VoskCoin everyone will go AMD then, that would be a terrible move for nvidia. I think they are enjoying this, holding off the release of the next gen and keeping a lid on supply, they can push prices sky high.... ...on the flip side, they are at the mercy of Samsung who make the ram... and are coincidentally rumoured to be looking at making asics ... so could Samsung also be throwing a deliberate spanner in the nvidia works by limiting ram availability in order to increase demand for their asics? shady stuff... it's money, and the bankers won't be pleased, unless the average Joe gets elbowed out and the only players left are the big boys with all the toys.

Hi Vosk. I just built a 1070 rig. When I start with a smos on a sub. Rig starts but monitor say no signal. Check all the obvious. Please help I'm a newbie. Love your videos. It's why I tried to build one. Pete
Neil Sumner (3 months ago)
Peter Mantovani look for the 'enable native/onboard graphics' in your mobo bios and check that, you can go back to Linux but you'll have to do some juggling with /etc/X11/xorg.conf if you want to get X out of your cards... running a monitor off a GPU will cost you a few MH. easiest way is to get the drivers loaded, run nvidia-settings from a terminal and select Intel power saving mode in prime profiles, then reboot. you can't over clock if you do this, but honestly it doesn't do very much on Linux anyway.

What do you think about payout threshold when you only have 1 or 2 cards mining? Sometimes it might take weeks/month to reach a threshold on certain coins which is very unsafe not holding your own coins. Would mining on pools that do daily payouts be better?
zodiacfml (3 months ago)
Nice. I learned a lot in just a few minutes of the video. I was not aware that the mining difficulty is variable depending on block generation as I wondered a few days ago if a coin's value drops for the long term. I also didn't know that Bitmain is more profitable than Nvidia which is a giant next to Intel.

I generally like your videos, but this video was little too less detailed. You didnt explain anything. Make a bigger video, do some work and roll out a better video how different algos adjust diffiulty. Why is it imp. How it makes crypto better than FIAT.

I got lucky and bought PNY GTX 1060 6GB cards from Huntsville, AL for $400.00USD a piece (1600.00 total) ! Since I seen your Octominer video.. Ive ordered 3 sets of components from them.. Excited to get them and put em to work! I also cloud mine.. My opinion is CCG Mining is the best!! Open contracts on both Bitcoin and Etherium!!
GameCaptain (3 months ago)
great video vosk! saw your video yesterday and was interested i hearing your opinion. I currently have (2) 1060 6gb cards in my normal, daily driven gaming CPU. I have been mining at night and over long weekends when im not around and was wondering what would be a better buy. Should i buy another 1060 and put that into my current rig and continue to mine half time or so, or should i fork up the cash and buy mobo, ram, processor, mining frame, psu and push my (2) 1060's over to it and let it run 24/7? My ROI would obviously be pushed back quite a bit with the new dedicated rig but might be better for long term? I just worry about how long the 1060 6gb will be effective while mining ETH/Equihash -thanks for your feedback
Eric Burns (3 months ago)
Great video. Please remember to inform folks to consider long term risk associated with difficulty. Calculators ignore. When new cards come out difficullty will likely increase quickly from improved hashrate of new technology. Similar to asics, however, not as extreme. Nvidia launches new cards this year, in the next few months folks can buy ampere.

all those thing happen is to ensure the coin still alive for a long good terms
S B (3 months ago)
Price cant go up forever, difficulty can. Thats a huge problem. 1080ti will make 1-2$ in two months, come back to my comment if i was wrong.
S B (3 months ago)
Wrong... more miners means all coins difficulty is going up. Maybe there can be a more profitable coin for few days but then it evens up.

TLDR: zenCash has 2:30min block time if more miner would come in the block time would be 2:10min. To avoid this from happening the diffeculty gets raised or if miners are leaveing the diffeculty gets lowerd. Basicly the diffeculty is there so the block time stays the same no metter how many are mining it

Great stuff as always! I'm looking for a site that keeps historical data for profitability, basically a site that tracks historic data from whattomine. Does anyone know if there is such a site? It would be great to take a look at how the profitability varies over time for a specific set of hardware and correlate difficulty as well. Any ideas? thx
darkdancerman (3 months ago)
ok stop. enough of this. where are you getting those cards in bulk like that. lol
Red Vn (3 months ago)
Buy in bulk. Like anything else in life, money talks. Vosk piece them out for the most part but the real savings are having contacts with BB/FS or Nvidia,( which I'm assuming he made / has ties to for his initial mass deployment, although I'm not sure) have a registered business and buy enough cards for a few dozen rig deployments. Another friend of mine who owns a larger ASIC mine bought a little less then my last order and sometimes they'll deal with 65-80 cards as long as your not looking for anything smaller then 1080 ti's / 1070 tis or VG 64's / 56's ( have a dozen of each, more of an Nvidia fan tho) . Your best bet if your not going to buy in bulk is either pay the exorbitant price of cards like the 99.8% of consumers, or just buy a bit of coin. Go look at Genesis or Megabigpower in Washington, they out buy and out last all the small people day by day. Mining like anything else that's very profitable has a few medium sized players like myself and friend of mine up north with 0.06c c and 0.05 on commercial rates doing over 2-2.5 grand a month in electrical bills,  and then your going to have a few massive players like Bitmains privately funded Mines , Gen , etc. The way I see it, the more gamers complain about the prices, the more miners feed on that, laugh, buy more cards , get better deals in mass bulk with connections, and not worry as much about the ROI knowing its coming on a larger scale then some kids with a dozen or so cards.  It takes money to make money, obviously like anything else, and the average person with 10-15 k to spend give or take just cant get any significant foot in the door with the crypto mining game like they used to a few years ago. This isn't spreading FOMO, go a head mine, I wont be a hypocrite , but unless your in it on a medium or larger scale or have funding of some sort/ independently wealthy, anyone educated will tell you you have a much better chance of making much larger gains on holdings then making under a couple hundred bucks a month if your lucky/ can afford a rig or two with 1070ti's 80tis or something of equivalent Hashrate.  If your already mining and got in before the spike/ also have connections in the bulk GPU game good on you as well, your one of the lucky few. Anyone still struggling with card pricing , Hodl, buy a GPU, or don't get into the space. Good luck to everybody lucky enough to be able to get into the space/ to have gotten into the space when it was much easier for just anybody to get into.

Hello VoskCoin great content keep it up, Question when is your tri-miner update coming?
Ziazmere (3 months ago)
I am Def not an expert, just my thoughts, but the Difficulty seems like a GPU nightmare. Looking at Zcash(ZEC) from Oct1 to Feb26, Zcash has averaged 1million additional difficulty per month, going from 5.5 Million to 9.5 million. What was a 1080ti making per day on Zcash back in Oct? If you take A 1080 ti that makes $3.25 a day currently on Zcash. In 5 months, what will a 1080ti make per day.... ?? $2.0, $1.0, .85 cents, with a difficulty at 15Million? I would really like to see an algorithm to plot out a value based on future Difficulty calculations for GPUs.
Battleneter (3 months ago)
Ziazmere your point is correct, but keep in mind the "assumption" is these coins will keep going up in value offsetting the difficulty increase or possibly exceeding it. That said the last 6 weeks have been pretty dam poor for mining and still slipping, and this could continue and or get worse for a few more months or longer . Mining has previously gone through several "years" of not being profitable, its funny how this has been forgotten and or people think it can't happen again.

@Voskcoin The explanation about difficulty was clear. The explanation about how mining fees are distributed was confusing and I'm not sure where on Internet it's documented/explained. (This is interesting in relevant for the new Bitcoin Private coin you covered already since their block rewards will be much less than other coins due to how many mined coins of the total will exist when they start their blockchain...) Does the miner or pool that finds the block get all the fees+block reward for that block? Does everyone that contributed in all pools everywhere get a share of the fees and the block reward only go to the party that found the block? Who escrow's the fees temporarily until a block winner emerges. We all saw over new years that the fees can change wildly over time -- but how is the market price for fees set when a sender doesn't set them manually? How do the checks and balances in the algorithms ensure mining remains financially viable when the software dev teams will be focused on keeping fees low enough people use the coin... An explanation of the scenario of how miners pay is determined in the future when the block reward is essentially zero yet the transfer fees need to be low enough people will still use crypto would be welcome. I assume mining is dead if the fees are < electricity cost when there is no block reward... etc...

VoskCoin, question. We've got a 6 card 1080ti FTW3 Hybrid rig and were wanting to build a second, lower budget rig. How will lower tier cards like GTX 1060's and GTX 1050's age? At what point will they become not profitable to mine with OR At what point will they become impossible to mine with? (if these are two different things) THANKS BRO! Subscribed!
Carlos Ruiz (3 months ago)
Make sure the cards have enough memory to hold the Ethereum DAG (both) if you want to future-proof the cards for longer than a year. Their DAG will reach the 3gb threshold early next year (according to the forecast) and your cards will not be able to mine it. I am expecting difficulty for ethereum algos to come down (not dramatically) when we hit that point. Gamers can rejoice then, since these cards will be "useless" for serious miners which should make their price come down dramatically. More info on DAG size here: https://investoon.com/tools/dag_size

Crzces (3 months ago)
imleetBR Ethereum’s difficultly is all over, and can be changed by the Eth board/committee whenever they like. Today (March 1rst) it just spiked again. It may have been pre-coded, or manually bumped, which gets very annoying. It’s also tripled since mid January 2018 which is ridiculous (it was basically flat December through January, with it shooting up over the last 29 days, today being particularly bad (feb 19-now have been relatively bad with it dropping for a day or two then spiking over it’s previous high DAG. I’ve dropped $0.23 per card per day in the last 12 hours, and it’s still going up. Once people get pissed and switch to something else the Ethereum group will panic and drop it for a week or so, then rinse and repeat.
