you are moving backwards. I love blockchain but this is some dumbshit. money orders are more expensive and not practical for people who actually need to pay bills like adults. get a checkbook and hate it just like the rest of us.

One can use the bitcoin debitcard from xapo.com, but I don´t know if it´s available in the US. I think you got other providers too!
Kenny Arroyo (2 years ago)
This sounds great! But what is the overall benefit ? I am aware on how the central bank system works and how the system that dominates the world currently is broken .. but I'm still trying to figure out how switching to Bitcoin would be more beneficial ?
Joseph Park (1 year ago)
Kenny Arroyo Well you see for every usd convert to bitcoin there is leverage bitcoin is equivalent to usd. Example $1.00usd= 1 bitcoin. Bitcoin can't be created out of thin air like fiat currency.

Also, thanks for this. I was using online bank- Simple and had a very bad experience. I had travelers checks from my grandmother who passed away. They "lost" it and said I must have been invalid. Not true since a major bank was fine with them in person. I live in a yurt off grid and use a mail service for an address. They basically booted me and said it's because I'm "homeless". I'm not homeless but I'd imagine homeless people could have use for a bank so that's just discrimination! So insulting, call me homeless, close my account then stole my money!
Ahnya Rysm (2 years ago)
First off, my employer will only pay with direct deposit. Secondly, money orders cost money! Seems like unbanking might be costly? There certainly push back against using alternative currency, like most things unconventional.

Amanda, Sweden is predicted to become a cashless society before 2030. This will include money transfers, money orders and cheques (checks US) Many other states are likely to follow suit. That would be a problem for non-bitcoin employment. Any ideas for an alternate workaround?
bobkilla430 (2 years ago)
you seem to have ommited some big items: cell phone plans. and what about insurance? health, auto, renters, home? car repairs? jiffy lune for car maintenance!? 1) their services are limited 2) overpriced 3) they are scum and notorious for ripping people off, not doing intended work on peoples cars and scamming people. what about buying or leasing a car? if not a car then what of public transportation? one thing i think you should have added was bitcoin atms, which 40% of them allow you to sell bitcoins for cash so it would be alot more convenient if you lived near one (400 and growing in the usa i believe) so you didnt. have limited options with gift cards. yes theres alot but if you live in a city where a no bank system would def work best, youre probably going out to eat at alot of local food shops, restaurants, bars etc that are not chain places. as for me banks are still the safest and most convenient place to have my money. if i was a whissleblower then id change my mind but alas im just a regular guy. while i am ignorant of how secure bitcoin is, my little research shows concerns over things like their atms being hacked and id be very surprised if places you store bitcoin guarantees if they are ever hacked you will regain your money like a bank does.(and id have less trust in those guarantees too) just some constructive criticism but good luck to all that do and its interesting where this will be in 5-10years.

RE: Being unbanked, using LocalBitcoins.com etc.. I use the Mycelium Local Trader. It's built right in to the Mycelium Bitcoin wallet for iOS and Android. LocalBitcoins for example does not work in all countries.

Unfortunately amazon doesn't ship to my country. Most of the gyft cards are for stores that are non existent here. Some payments from the government you can only receive on a bank account. And more issues. I saw someone mention bitwage, maybe that works here, but all of the hoops you have to jump through. It is a lot of effort.

people were somehow getting gas at Walmart using a Walmart gift card from egifter and gyft until they cut them off. you may be able to get a target gift card and then go to their gift card rack and buy a gas station gift card. there used to be a bitcoin gas card website once upon a time. also snapcard let you buy almost anything and pay utility bills and even taxes with btc, at least they used to back n the day. they charged like 2% though.

Eric Johnson (2 years ago)
Bitwage makes getting paid in Bitcoin as easy as direct depositing to any bank account. And you can change where the coins go at any time. Send 10% to a separate wallet for your long-term savings!
Amanda B. Johnson (2 years ago)
+Eric Johnson Hey, that's a great pointer. Outsourcing ftw.
Ivor Thomas (2 years ago)
Fold app 20% off everything Starbucks, and of course Purse.io for *routine* 25% discounts on all Amazon stuff. Fiat just can't compete with the free escrow that happens behind the scenes with bitcoiny stuff. I think we'll be seeing more 'programmable money' innovation in 2016. Maybe gaming and music? Who knows, but that is where regular non-geeky folks are going to get interested.
Amanda B. Johnson (2 years ago)
+Ivor Thomas Yes, you are so right. It was only after recording the video that I slapped my own forehead, realizing I forgot to mention FoldApp. Thanks for doing so.

Every time I looked at localbitcoins, the sellers want ID
Chris J (2 years ago)
+Mark Ford Sellers on localbitcoins (and companies selling you coin) are at risk of fraud attempts, so ask for ID to prevent most of those attempts and prove your sending from your account. If you really don't want to show ID, seller's might be more comfortable with cash deposits, or you could meet and pay cash.
Mark Ford (2 years ago)
Wall of Coins demands my exact location
Amanda B. Johnson (2 years ago)
+Mark Ford The sellers of Bitcoin? Hm. I'd say go with WallofCoins, then. I've been happy with their service.
The Solarminer (2 years ago)
Great show. I have one to add: www.billpayforcoins.com is what you need for paying those utilities. I used them once and had no problems. Hint, you can pay a credit card bill too effectively making this an all in one solution if you are ok with using a credit card.
The Solarminer (2 years ago)
+The Daily Decrypt I used them several months ago. They also announced a debit card loadable with bitcoin in June. That would be a bummer if it was gone. Otherwise, Xapo.com is another option for bitcoin-$ debit cards.
Amanda B. Johnson (2 years ago)
+The Solarminer I had heard that that site was defunct. How recently did you have success using them? Thanks!
EstefanTT (2 years ago)
You should check the nano card from CCEDK, it allows you to pay with Bitcoin anywhere they accept visa payment. It may simplify your quest of living unbanked ;p
Amanda B. Johnson (2 years ago)
+EstefanTT Ah! Great, thanks for the tip.

this has been my favorite episode so far! i also like the addition of the ticker! (i just noticed it.) one way i use BTC to live=funding the wallets of my young niece and nephew (whilst teaching them a lil about BTC) in order to "pay it forward" so to speak. Though a small contribution it may be,i feel i am helping to ensure Bitcoin's continued survival in the future. Long Live Bitcoin! p.s. after multiple failed attempts at sending you a tip in the form of NeuCoin,i think that maybe it is an address issue. ya know, maybe a 4 where it should be a 9 or something. idk. anyhow, get back to me when ya can. Long Live The Decrypt!
Voodoo Banana Studios (2 years ago)
+The Daily Decrypt i think i figured out that i am a dumbass officially! You all are just a lil bit awesome-er in my book! Long Live The Daily Decrypt! p.s.that NeuCoin address amongst your list...did i just overlook it previously? or did i just notice it? (sorry,im a dork sometimes.)

How to become bitcoin trader? Exactly like Bitcoin, multiple digital currencies exist in the marketplace. So if you prefer to buy a few other currencies which aren`t available on Indian Exchange than you can utilize Bittrex. All you have to do is locate an exchange that you favor. Cryptocurrency exchanges have a massive potential to modify peoples minds and opinions concerning cryptocurrencies generally speaking and their application in actual life. So even in the event the exchange is attacked, its still true that you have your money. Furthermore, the exchanges prepare each and every industry for Bitcoin expansion. Existing stock exchanges will also compete to be able to fulfill the users configuration requirements. Sooner or later later on, the prices will grow more equal, meeting somewhere in the middleyour profit is equivalent to the quantity of convergence. No matter how far it is from Kijun, it is likely to return and test that level at some point. The amount of bitcoin is perpetually changing. In the US, it is 1000 USD. Whats even better, seek the services of a seasoned lawyer or at least ask for an in depth consultation. So youve read the newspaper about the meteoric growth of crypto currencies including Bitcoin or Ripple. Then coming up with 1000s of exchange rates simply to go out and get groceries is nearly impossible. Many cities around the world provide a bitcoin ATM where you are able to trade cash for bitcoin. The cryptocurrency world isn`t efficient.
