The quote Hank said at the end- was it from Cosmos? (The book) if so, what page was it? I need to reference it for an essay.
Zea (7 months ago)
Very minor correct, but Sagan apparently never said "billions and billions" I wouldn't complain about something so minor, but he seemed to care to distinguish this, as in Sagan's last book, "Billions & Billions: Thoughts on Life and Death at the Brink of the Millennium" the very beginning sentence is, "I never said it." And I kinda figure might as well respect that instead of spreading the popular misinformation. The association of this phrase supposedly came from a tonight show skit with Johnny Carson; however, he did say "billions upon billions".

Carl sagan made me love the amazing wonderful thing, that is, science. Before i encountered the works of sagan, i merely studied science, but after him, i found its real essence.

Why didn´t you just let Sagan say the quote himself?

What an AWFUL way to "honor" Carl Sagan. You perpetuate the B & B myth. After your unexplained, uncited ad-hominems about holding "grudges", you escalate by calling him "petty" for suing Apple for using his name internally and on usenet postings- what you (and all deranged Apple evangelists) conveniently omit is that the prototype Mac model called Sagan was one of a trio; the others were named Cold Fusion and Piltdown Man. Having your named grouped with scientific disasters/hoaxes is certainly objectionable. "Happry Birthday" indeed, you millennial slimeball.

Why did they put all the information on a record? What if aliens don't possess the technology needed to access it. They could think that it's just a Frisbee or something. In an episode of Big Bang theory they discussed the need for a means of displaying information in a way that would be accessible to most alien life forms so I guess Sagan didn't put much thought into that.
C141421356 (2 years ago)
+Andrew O'Malley- It's true. Simple media, instructions and means to play it. If they are not advanced enough to figure it out, they'll likely just worship it...as in the Star Trek movie. "Veger" lol
Alias Elysum (2 years ago)
+Andrew O'Malley That makes sense. Otherwise you just have a round disk.
Andrew O'Malley (2 years ago)
+Alias Elysum They actually included the equipment needed to play the record, along with pictographic instructions on how to play it, on the spacecraft!
bruceduece1 (2 years ago)
+Alias Elysum The record was very durable. You could hear the recording using a sharp pin and rotating the disc. Even primitive Earthlings would figure it out when they saw the round disks, grooves and all. As far as the text, it's very much like the Rosetta Stone. The same message is given in multiple languages, so that the techniques of logic could be applied to deciphering it. It's all so elegant and simple, as Carl used to say!
Alias Elysum (2 years ago)
+bruceduece1 Wouldn't you need a phonograph to play a phonograph disk? What if the aliens don't have an equivalent? As for a message in multiple languages, unless the aliens have some prior knowledge of Earth languages or those similar to it how would they decipher the message? The only way that Egyptian hieroglyphs were deciphered was because of the Rosetta stone which had the same text in languages that were already known. That's why I don't think aliens would be able to make anything of the message.

Will always remember when Pathfinder landed on Mars and once the mission ended they made it the Carl Sagan Memorial...I admit I cried a little. One of the men who taught me it was okay to view science with wonder and happiness; when I was a kid a lot of my teachers acted like it was wrong to say "that's cool!" about anything scientific, which let's face it kind of made science class suck.

Tony Boyle (3 years ago)
Lets see;-Sagan says we evolved, and this evolution could happen anywhere.  In "billions and billions" of years, millions of other such civilizations should have developed.  Some would have to be far in advance of ours. They could find us easily, and yet, we have never seen any of them.  Where are they? Sagan is smart, but I believe it is "borrowed" smart.  His arrogance makes him seem all-knowing. But he leaves out many secrets of physics which could disprove his disbelief in God.  Conveniently.
Stefan Veenstra (3 years ago)
He never leaved anything out on science, even if it were convenient. Just as there's no evidence of a God, there's no evidence of extraterrestrial life. That doesn't mean there's no God, it doesn't mean there's no extraterrestrial life as advanced as ours, but to exclude the possibility is an arrogance of intellect.
Rob Fraser (3 years ago)
+Tony Boyle If you assume that we are about half way through a 9 billion year long universal life cycle then the 200 years that we have had electricity until the century or two we might have left before we make ourselves extinct is like a single speck of sand on a mile long beach.  I believe we won't be the only civilization to reach heights, but the others either died hundreds of millions of years ago or they are still crawling around lakes having only just adapted to oxygen. The chances of another civilization reaching it's peak inside our tiny window of greatness is beyond astronomical.

+Tony Boyle Just when i think i have heard the dumbest thing on the internet for the day, someone always says something dumber but today you win. Congratulations!
gewbeaw (3 years ago)
Some say that we may have missed alien signals. We continually search for radio signals outside of earth, but Dr.Tyson states that we might not have the right technology to look for these aliens, let alone, imagine the kind of communication that other civilizations are using. I am a born and raised catholic and i do believe in God, but it does not change the facts. We have been past the clouds, voyager 1 is past pluto, and we have millions of information regarding history, pre-human, pre-living things, we have made medicines (found through microorganisms), we have made transportation, and that's all through science. If you believe that science is wrong, then obviously, you are only looking at the big picture.

+Tony Boyle You are joking right?
Tony Boyle (3 years ago)
And if he really said that, then his disbelief in God is totally unbelievable.  He knew many things, and may have believed in God, but if he had said so, many scientists of lesser intellect would have made fun of him. The scientific community is made up of a few massive intellects, but most are "go along to get along" posers. The smartest ones DO believe in God, but they will never admit it, for that would mean professional suicide, and saying so would dry up all available research funds for the believer.

Well, speaking as a man who was ALREADY into astronomy and science BEFORE Sagan popularized it, I really wish he hadn't been such a goddamn asshole on all levels. sinekonata (4 years ago)
Why should we care about that guy?
dominic508 (4 years ago)
+sinekonata Well what should he have talked about then? He gave basic informations about him, what he was known for, what his role was, detailed his personality a bit, what he worked on... What were you expecting from a 4 minute video meant to present him to people who might not be familiar with him? And what's up with this ''American nostalgia'' thing you talk about? I'm not even American, and his work isn't ''specific'' to any country, of all the scientist that ever walked the earth, he's probably actually the one with the most ''globalist'' view of the human species and our role in the universe. I think you might be holding some grudges or or a misplaced value system about what science is ''supposed to do''.
sinekonata (4 years ago)
Irrelevant is the word. Sometimes Hank does that. E.g. he will share with us the personal life of Albert Einstein, without even a focus on the repercussions on his work, only for the sake of "knowing the man". It is highly useless to me, as I learn nothing useful about life and things. Therefore I gave my feedback. Same here, this episode about Carl Sagan was only useful for the sake of nostalgic people from the US...
dominic508 (4 years ago)
+***** I don't understand your point. You're saying this video didn't explain well enough why his work is important, or you *know* his work but think it's irrelevant?
sinekonata (4 years ago)
I obviously watched it. My underlying question was : "why should we care about pop science specific to the US maybe Canada?" This doesn't take into account anyone that doesn't know that guy yet cares about science.

How to become bitcoin trader? Exactly like Bitcoin, multiple digital currencies exist in the marketplace. So if you prefer to buy a few other currencies which aren`t available on Indian Exchange than you can utilize Bittrex. All you have to do is locate an exchange that you favor. Cryptocurrency exchanges have a massive potential to modify peoples minds and opinions concerning cryptocurrencies generally speaking and their application in actual life. So even in the event the exchange is attacked, its still true that you have your money. Furthermore, the exchanges prepare each and every industry for Bitcoin expansion. Existing stock exchanges will also compete to be able to fulfill the users configuration requirements. Sooner or later later on, the prices will grow more equal, meeting somewhere in the middleyour profit is equivalent to the quantity of convergence. No matter how far it is from Kijun, it is likely to return and test that level at some point. The amount of bitcoin is perpetually changing. In the US, it is 1000 USD. Whats even better, seek the services of a seasoned lawyer or at least ask for an in depth consultation. So youve read the newspaper about the meteoric growth of crypto currencies including Bitcoin or Ripple. Then coming up with 1000s of exchange rates simply to go out and get groceries is nearly impossible. Many cities around the world provide a bitcoin ATM where you are able to trade cash for bitcoin. The cryptocurrency world isn`t efficient.
