'The Age of Altcoins is Upon Us'

260 ratings | 5487 views
As an ecosystem, cryptocurrencies can no longer function with Bitcoin as a near single-point-of-failure. If all the things are to be decentralized, altcoins must now work to build out their infrastructures. 'Cause you coulda -- gonna? -- be a contendah. I need to open the 1st Costa Rica hostel run on crypto, all crypto. It's just a matter of time now Amanda. Peace sister.

I think it's a little early to be claiming that bitcoin is going to take the whole ship down... Lol In a month when they roll out SW and a few months later when the halving happens and the price goes way up everyone will be singing a different tune... But a understand why altcoins feel the need to attack every precieved weakness in bitcoin...
Albert M Picard (2 years ago)
It's a whole lot of FUD, the Bitcoin network is really rather fine, higher fees and you have no problems at all until segwit comes along, which gives them times for other things like blocksize increases and lightning network. But, people are trying to drop the price in anticipation for the block halving, so whatever. Once all of the pumpers move out of ETH and other altcoins soon as they start dumping then they'll transition back into Bitcoin as the safe haven that it is, nobody REALLY thinks these coins are a threat, at least nobody worth listening to anyway.
anyau92 (2 years ago)
I think you should wait until #segwit is (if its out) in april(hopefully early april as they stated in their roadmap) before drawing to conclusions, also i think altcoins like Ethereum,Litecoin, DASH and dogecoin could supplement bitcoin in one way or another

Get the fuck to IT! HAHAHA your a legend! ;D
Bollen Crypto (2 years ago)
Just so you all know. Bitcoin have already fix that problem. IF you send bitcoin today IT will take 5 min. Fact!

Get the fuck to it indeed.

Wow. This girl is crypto hearted :)
A Redondas (2 years ago)
well, I regret to say that you include to many value judgments. There are challenges but bitcoin is not doomed as it appears to be after viewing your show. It is legitimate to think that because there is no hard fork agreement yet we should change to another alt coin, but it is not coherent to keep on funding yourself with it, and that is the point: people have a lot of incentives to continue using bitcoin crypto, and there is already huge infraestructure built (and planed). I think you are doing the wrong bet, that makes me think why..
Roy Wessbecher (2 years ago)
Damn right! Good for lighting a fire under our lazy arses! I'll get a ShapeShift- ("Shifty-") button on my site asap. :-)
jonnyhatter35 (2 years ago)
Amanda, i would encourage you to invite Fluffypony back and have him explain the way Monero deals with blocksize. It's really an elegant solution to the biggest problem Bitcoin faces atm, and it would be great for altcoin momentum.

+The Daily Decrypt - I died of Dysentery on an Apple II back in '85. I did shoot an elk, however, I could only take 100lbs. with me.
Jeremiah Nichol (2 years ago)
+Ron Helwig You win! That's amazing stuff. Ha Ha. Nice!
Ron Helwig (2 years ago)
+Jeremiah Nichol LOL, newb. :-) I died of dysentery in the 70s using a teletype printer over a 300 baud modem to a timeshare computer. I also played Star Trek on it - printing out the sector grids using ascii characters. Even cooler though is that in the early 90s I was a tester for the company (MECC at the time) and got to test the upcoming Windows version. I played one version where you could make spectacular gains trading, and I arrived in Oregon with millions of dollars a few times.

It's funny how, when you come to the crux of the matter, my vision becomes cloudy.
ugh (2 years ago)
One thing that makes the task at hand somewhat easier is that many altcoins are based on the Bitcoin codebase. This means that, for example, code which makes RPC calls to Bitcoin Core will work (almost?) unchanged with, say, Litecoin or Dogecoin. I know, I've done it: when I wrote a site where you could donate Dogecoin, I actually used the documentation for *Bitcoin*'s RPC calls, and it worked wonderfully.

+Aiden Feron Monero and Ether aren't Bitcoin-based, but Dash is.
Aiden Feron (2 years ago)
+TazeTSchnitzel dude when we're talking about emerging alt-coins, we're not talking about Litecoin or Dogecoin. Yes you're right, those two alts are essentially copies of bitcoins code, with a tremendously smaller userbase and market cap. What Amanda is talking about in this video, is the emergence of truly unique, resilient and useful cryptos like Monero, Dash, Ether. Dogecoin and Litecoin are in the same boat as Bitcoin, they are the dinosaurs that pioneered the Crypto space in the early days, kind of like the rocket boosters that take a space spaceship into orbit, but now it's time for them to fall off and let the new cryptos do their thing. Don't be mad, just divest into those three alts I mentioned, and you'll be fine.

Background changed to single color = IMPROVEMENT. Brown out of all colours = I don't know, man...
Amanda B. Johnson (2 years ago)
+Utku Tönel Yeah, as mentioned in another reply, we had actually been testing an orange sheet (it appears brown for some reason) to see if it could function as a green screen (which it most definitely did not). So now I'm ordering one. I agree that it's time for an upgrade in background!

Just like there is no single best model of car, phone, watch, etc., it makes no sense to consider Bitcoin the only valid cryptocoin. Need anonymity? Speed? Special features? There are altcoins that are much better suited than Bitcoin. Thank you Shapeshift! Makes things much easier.
Lucas T (2 years ago)
Truth has been spoken.
Chris Noonan (2 years ago)
Now your talking.
jonnyhatter35 (2 years ago)
Monero shot up like 30 percent today.
Lucas T (2 years ago)
I think I should up my technical analysis game then.... I could see the good momentum it was getting but would never imagine a sudden burst like that. And since I've been seeing some weird movements on ethereum lately -- which has 60k btc volume per 24h on poloniex -- I thought it was easy for whales to play with a low volume coin -- at the moment -- like Monero.
jonnyhatter35 (2 years ago)
+Lucas T It's been picking up momentum pretty steady. The fundamentals are great. I'd encourage you to look into them. I see Monero as what Bitcoin's struggling to be (I love Bitcoin too, don't get me wrong). All that being said, whale activity should NEVER be discounted :)
mwont (2 years ago)
+Lucas T RingCT and GUI are coming, Tutantoa intrest in Monero, and exodus.io will include Monero support.

+Lucas T This move has been building for a long time...
Lucas T (2 years ago)
+jonnyhatter35 I see... Do you know exaclty why? The fundamentals behind it? Or is it just whales playing around?

Yup....continuing to transition out of bitcoin into Ethereum and DASH.
halfasheep (2 years ago)
+calholli I was stupid and forgot I had about 15 btc in Cryptsy (losers leave monies in exchanges/they are all a risk (except maybe less so for Gemini). I got it out via conversion to Dogecoin (but still say screw you Jackson Palmer for shitting on ppl involved with btc....and then dge lol!)....all except about 0.4 btc or something. Served me right. Cryptsy was obviously wobble like Mt Gox. I blame idiots like me for making Gox the disaster that it was.
calholli (2 years ago)
+halfasheep I was doing the same before Cryptsy went down......... fuck my life
halfasheep (2 years ago)
+mwont Incentivised nodes....very quick confirms like CASH (DASH like CASH).....an outlook to scale even further......lead dev comes across well.......(is no longer called Darkcoin).....no dealing with "zero point zero zero ..... (0.0004 btc shit figures) these type figures are no good for the greater public and usage IMO.
mwont (2 years ago)
+halfasheep Why DASH?

Decentralize all the things!
Chase That Coin (2 years ago)
I just feel like it would be hard for merchants to take alt coins bc of free chose. Who knows which of the 700 altcoins ppl will invest in, 2/3 of which are Pos and not proven... This would mean they'd have to take at least half the alt coins out there. I think this path will push crypto back in the public eye for a long time and make a lot of copy cat scam coins a lot of money
sbohunko (2 years ago)
Well, Im all for alts, but the truth of the matter is that Bitcoin has always been in troubled waters and it always comes out on top. The reason for this is that the whole community is incentivized to make Bitcoin better whereas only a small group of alt developers is incentivized to improve an alt. Side chains are only a year or two away, ZKC is really making us smile here in Bitcoin land.
Robert Balejik (2 years ago)
+sbohunko well BTC has its role as "digital gold" for transfering amounts bigger than ~2000$.... but for everyday use I'd say dash (food, shopping..) ethereum for sharing economy. Every crypto currency is good for smth else
moonman9j9 (2 years ago)
DAMN You're not screwing around! <3
Devin Nash (2 years ago)
Drinking to much of that David Seaman lately (no pun). bitcoin will not stop regardless if your transaction take .1 seconds or 100 days.
Ward Stirrat (2 years ago)
Indeed The Age of Alt Coins IS upon us. FYI Coinpayments.net was the 1st Altcoin processor & now process 55 Alt Coins, including Ether. & soon Maidsafe... No need to "convert" to anything - we have 55 wallets. Check it out. Coinpayments Alexa ranking put it at the 57,000's most popular site on the Internet, 9,000 ahead of shape shift.

Amanda B. Johnson (2 years ago)
+Q Queuenstein Thanks, we were actually experimenting to see if that sheet (which is actually orange, not brown) would work as a green screen. It didn't (obviously), so now I'm ordering one.
Thomas Kirwan (2 years ago)
When it comes to Bitcoin failing to keep the available supply of processing capacity in line with the demand, I think this is a situation that will inevitably be remedied because it simply must for the network to survive. I think one aspect of Bitcoin is that it is resilient to change. So much so that the network will wait until the absolute last minute to change, but that change will actually happen quite quickly once some critical moment arrives as there is too much money at stake. This is as much a negative attribute as it is positive. Your concern that Bitcoin is almost always on the other side of an altcoin transaction is certainly legitimate. I think that should Bitcoin survive, which I believe it will, this will generally tend to be the case, as Bitcoin appears to be extremely useful for settlement. I think Arcade City has a real opportunity to spread awareness of the crypto space as well as provide a great use case for spending altcoins, such as Dash, directly for services rendered. Though the road ahead may look like an impossible uphill battle, I think the forces that provide the greatest challenge and obstacle against this decentralization of all the things will step on their own toes and make way to this sea change.
ConsideringPhlebas (2 years ago)
You seem perturbed, hope you're well. Anyhow, yes, this is a point I've made myself. Crypto is too BTC-centric. Sure, there's quite a few crypto-fiat markets, e.g., doge-cny, ltc-usd, eth-euro, but generally the medium of exchange is btc. Maybe Nubits or something could be the medium, but it's hard to change a system that's so ingrained. Anyway, I'm not that inclined to worry about the Bitcoin schism. These people are invested to the tune of millions in the technology, they have the least incentive of anyone to let it go to zero.
Lucas T (2 years ago)
+ConsideringPhlebas Yeah, a natural "monopoly" is always better than an institutionalized one. Unlike the government, the prevalence of bitcoin is due to market preferences, so maybe we shouldn't fear. BTC will be dethroned when it's time; it's just the beginning for blockchain technology, it could develop with bitcoin or any other currency.
ConsideringPhlebas (2 years ago)
+Lucas T I think the formation of some kind of 'establishment' is inevitable. The good thing about crypto is that it's a marketplace of competitors, not just Bitcoin.
Lucas T (2 years ago)
+ConsideringPhlebas And the thing most cryptocurrencies enthusiasts fear seems to be happening: Like in government, a digital currencies establishment...

Vention1MGTOW (2 years ago)
I'm still bullish on bitcoin. It may take a while but it will be upgraded. If they put the volume of bitcoin traffic on most of the alts, they'd curl up their legs and die like a fly in a microwave oven. That said, I own some dash, maidsafe and Ethereum and I've been enjoying the last couple weeks of gains. Thanks for getting me into them. The gains in those currencies more than made up for the recent price drop in bitcoin.
Dan Smith (2 years ago)
Haha. Good job Amanda.

How to become bitcoin trader? Exactly like Bitcoin, multiple digital currencies exist in the marketplace. So if you prefer to buy a few other currencies which aren`t available on Indian Exchange than you can utilize Bittrex. All you have to do is locate an exchange that you favor. Cryptocurrency exchanges have a massive potential to modify peoples minds and opinions concerning cryptocurrencies generally speaking and their application in actual life. So even in the event the exchange is attacked, its still true that you have your money. Furthermore, the exchanges prepare each and every industry for Bitcoin expansion. Existing stock exchanges will also compete to be able to fulfill the users configuration requirements. Sooner or later later on, the prices will grow more equal, meeting somewhere in the middleyour profit is equivalent to the quantity of convergence. No matter how far it is from Kijun, it is likely to return and test that level at some point. The amount of bitcoin is perpetually changing. In the US, it is 1000 USD. Whats even better, seek the services of a seasoned lawyer or at least ask for an in depth consultation. So youve read the newspaper about the meteoric growth of crypto currencies including Bitcoin or Ripple. Then coming up with 1000s of exchange rates simply to go out and get groceries is nearly impossible. Many cities around the world provide a bitcoin ATM where you are able to trade cash for bitcoin. The cryptocurrency world isn`t efficient.
