For inventors, patents are an essential protection against theft. But when patent trolls abuse the system by stockpiling patents and threatening lawsuits, businesses are forced to shell out tons of money. Connect with Last Week Tonight online... This happened at my school like a year ago or so- we established a brand new suicide prevention program in light of a recent student death and we got sued due to having the same name as a patent that was bought by a company

Patent procedure even in here is quite tiresome. You have to search for similar patents if it isn't something completely new from component to component. You have to search all the corresponding patents then fill up the documents which take a lot of fees and then as you apply the patent in the patent office you have to wait for the department to give you an answer. Meanwhile it is searched for other patent infringements which you already did and for the possible existence of the idea of the patent. You wait almost a year to hear back and if you're lucky probably 3 months.

Funny enough, it's similar to how some businesses or companies try to get YouTube to take down content they have no ownership of and sometimes content the channel owns, taking advantage of the fact that YouTube doesn't check such claims first.

I've been through the patent process before and let me tell you, it is a pain to deal with. Researching beforehand to make sure that your idea doesn't infringe on pre-existing ideas is nearly impossible And without a lawyer, that process becomes 10x harder. I actually got a patent denied because aspects of the design were similar to something that someone else had used for a completely different idea unrelated to what I was trying to patent. I honestly feel so sorry for companies who have to deal with patent trolls. Aside from them, my main issue with our patent system is how it can really put a stop to innovation. While it is essential, especially for small businesses who fear that without protection their ideas will be stolen and used by larger companies, it makes it difficult to combine ideas and innovate without infringing upon others ideas. There was an issue a while back where the creators of the wikipad sued Nintendo for their joycon design due to patent infringement. They wanted to have Nintendo halt all sales of the Switch, which is a ridiculous demand. The worst part is, the wikipad hasn't been on the market for years.

I’m surprised apple wasn’t mentioned because they took the open source haptic engine, renamed it to Taptic Engine, and tweaked it very slightly and then patented it. So really they are a patent troll.
Ulquiorra Cifer (1 month ago)
They should have a policy stating that you lost patent rights if you do not utilize it within a year or some other period of time. Utilize being producing a product or licensing it.

intellectual property in technological areas should be largely a non-issue all the manufacturer has to do is not release the source code of their program and it becomes a lot harder to just copy it. in the event that it is copied, then assuming the company has already garnered somewhat of a client base then they should be fine, youtube has a million clones, but youtube is the most popular because it delivers a better user experience and has an established client base it's the same with google, facebook, or tinder. they aren't selling technology, they are selling a user experience, and they will only get knocked down if someone creates a compelling alternative or improvement on them, which is healthy competition. in the case of these companies their brand is more valuable than their search engine, video platform, social media outlet or dating app. the only major area where this does not apply is the area of developer tools like adobe after effects, digital animation tools, word processors, video game engines, or computer programming compilers. these tools perform complex tasks and produce a tangible product, as opposed to a service, or user experience. In every other field, there is simply no grounds for arguing that intellectual property be respected, if somebody makes something better, people will use it instead, if somebody can reverse engineer just by looking at it, you haven't done anything special

When society no longer functions, then all is fair game, and thus if a lawyer on behalf of a patent troll threatens to sue which will destroy your livelihood, you threaten their life. They take you to court, you kill them. If society functioned, then the need to resort to violence wouldn't be necessary, but we don't live in that country.

TheYummyKenshin (3 months ago)
If you don't respond, they win by default and can pretty much get the full value for the case. At that point they can pretty much do whatever to get their money like garnishing your wages.

Thankfully Uniloc's ability to sue people over that "software activation" patent has been disabled completely, because it's been proven legally that they do not actually own any of the software designs that they've been saying they did. https://www.engadget.com/2016/03/26/uniloc-patent-troll-defeated/

The government does this too - opt for settling with a major company that broke the law instead of going to trial. The companies don't want to go to trial, because they might then get laws/sanctions put against them by a judge, which has long-term consequences other than just paying out more in a settlement one-time. America has lost it's third branch of government due to the process John speaks of.

The problem is we can't use the anti patent troll system to fuck normal people over. I read an article and Popular Mechanics about just an everyday Joe heart doctor who had the sudden idea for a heart valve replacement and then decided to patent it. Then he was at a heart convention and he discovered that there was a much larger Corporation who had ripped off his patent. He tried to sue for patent infringement but ended up getting fucked over by the anti patent troll system because they thought he was a patent troll trying to get money.

And America was trying to force India and other countries to not allow basic medicines which had patents in America be considered as generic and sold at a low cost to the poor nations of the world. Sorry to say this, but America as a foreign policy pursues being a patent troll. Patenting medicines and medical procedures deprives basic human right of medical help for common folks and forces them to pay extravagant amounts of money for them. This is inhuman and ethically wrong, but unfortunately the foreign policy of America is so heavily influences by lobbying, that it cannot think in terms of humanity, only in terms of money (I'm happy to say that India nor the other nations caved to the pressures from America. I believe they are pursuing the case in WTO now)

We Live in an Alternate Timeline; Our Simulation Rebooted About 15 Years AgoI've been doing extensive research on this anomaly after some personal experiences drove me in the right direction. What I'm going to tell you sounds crazy. But if you think about it, you'll somehow know it's true. I don't know how, you just will.First of all, realize that we live inside of a simulation much like the Matrix. The difference is that in the Matrix, the people in the simulation at least have real physical bodies plugged into the Matrix; our entire beings are in the simulation.About 15 years ago, there was a nuclear holocaust that eliminated human life on the planet. I'm not sure if anyone survived but it was at least a virtual extinction. The mass experience of death and emotion caused something in our simulation to crash or triggered something in the program. There was some kind of mass awakening. Most of us experienced the flesh burning off of our bodies and being vaporized. We were all still aware post-death. We saw the complete destruction of human civilization forever and existed in that reality for a little bit. Some of us were surrounded in nothing but pure white light after being vaporized. Then, everything rematerialized in front of us back to normal. This was our simulation rebooting.I think that our mass awakening triggered something in the simulation and caused it to do like a system restore. I'm not sure what the implications of that are. I think that our simulation has a certain goal and that we were not supposed to destroy ourselves before accomplishing it. Once we do accomplish it, I'm not sure if that's good for us or if the simulation just shuts off.

Sephiroth Prime (6 months ago)
This video is very misleading in a certain nuanced way. In one way he acknowledged that software patents are a new thing since the advent of software technologies and even admitted some of the main elements of a patent are novelty, utility, and non-obviousness. Since they’re so new most software patents are still in use. But he failed to connect the dots. Creating an invention gives the inventor or assignee a limited monopoly granting the negative exclusive right to exclude others from making, selling, offering to sell, using, or practicing the invention for 20 years from the date of filing. So basically if I filed the “scan to email” patent less than 20 years ago and xerox has a license to use my patent in its products and you are using my patent commercially...I couldn’t sue you due to patent exhaustion. But if xerox had no license to practice my invention I’d sue you as a direct infringer and xerox as an indirect infringer. Not a patent troll per se in that scenario, just protecting my inventions and exercising my rights. Hope he was talking about some other scenario. And the hunk about Texas is about interpreted reviews to challenge patent validity etc. that is a little messed up, but if I have a right and I have a choice of venue I’d be in the most hospitable venue too. Sue me. All pun intended. John Oliver...don’t come for my field bro...don’t come for my field.
TRAVIS BERGMAN (6 months ago)
Wait. Patents are protecting ownership of items, not using those items.

Oliver is a douche, but he's bringing attention to something that boils down extortion.

So, just for example, I'd be able to patent "unable to connect to the Internet screens" then file against any companies that uses them? Well thats fucking stupid. I'm totally not gonna do that.

How to become bitcoin trader? Exactly like Bitcoin, multiple digital currencies exist in the marketplace. So if you prefer to buy a few other currencies which aren`t available on Indian Exchange than you can utilize Bittrex. All you have to do is locate an exchange that you favor. Cryptocurrency exchanges have a massive potential to modify peoples minds and opinions concerning cryptocurrencies generally speaking and their application in actual life. So even in the event the exchange is attacked, its still true that you have your money. Furthermore, the exchanges prepare each and every industry for Bitcoin expansion. Existing stock exchanges will also compete to be able to fulfill the users configuration requirements. Sooner or later later on, the prices will grow more equal, meeting somewhere in the middleyour profit is equivalent to the quantity of convergence. No matter how far it is from Kijun, it is likely to return and test that level at some point. The amount of bitcoin is perpetually changing. In the US, it is 1000 USD. Whats even better, seek the services of a seasoned lawyer or at least ask for an in depth consultation. So youve read the newspaper about the meteoric growth of crypto currencies including Bitcoin or Ripple. Then coming up with 1000s of exchange rates simply to go out and get groceries is nearly impossible. Many cities around the world provide a bitcoin ATM where you are able to trade cash for bitcoin. The cryptocurrency world isn`t efficient.
