[HOW TO]- Store Bitcoin On USB Stick - Guide

2110 ratings | 180967 views
In this video I'll show you how to make a secure and encrypted USB Bitcoin Wallet. I'm going to use MultiBit to create this wallet and then store it onto a USB thumb drive for safe keeping. I'm also going to copy the contents of the USB drive onto multiple other USB drives so that my money is backed up in multiple locations. This way, if anything happens to one of my USB wallets, I can fall back on a copy that I made, and recover the bitcoins (BTC). Even though there are copies of my wallet files, they will all be updated to the real balance if any one of them is modified. This is because the private keys, once accessed with your password or pass phrase, within the Bitcoin network ultimately keep track of the money associated with them. This is why we can create this wallet offline, and allow the network to synchronize and verify that the funds that are supposed to be in our wallet appear. If necessary, we can send the funds from the USB stick to another wallet, either Online, Cloud, or Offline cold storage. Thanks for watching! Bitcoin For Black People (4 months ago)
somebody told me today ( just now) that he bought 2 bitcoin at 200 years back and used multibit on his usb stick. he says that because "multibit went out of business" that he can only see all this money in his multibit wallet but he can no longer use it. This cant be true , i replied. and explianed to him that his bitcoin is actually "on the blockchain" NOT in his wallet. (then i gave him a long overly technical explanation). Am i wrong? why cant he just download another wallet and enter the exact same private key/public key combination and have access to his bitcoin?
minicomma (4 months ago)
maybe he relied on multiunit to store his keys and didn't have a back up written down to know what his secret keys/public keys were.  Yup, in that case, he probably lost his funds to the never-never-land :( Poor guy!

Hi this is from the Multibit.org website Multibit is No Longer Supported Dear Bitcoin Community, It is time for us to let Multibit go. KeepKey acquired Multibit a little over 1 year ago. At the time, the engineers who originally built and supported Multibit had announced that they would no longer be working on it or providing support. Multibit played an important role in the Bitcoin infrastructure. We felt that it was important for Multibit to continue and hoped that with our existing support and development teams, we would be able to keep Multibit alive.
Alessia Aikley (4 months ago)
Sooo.. why couldn't you just put your private keys on a flash drive, say in a notepad format. Then erase your desktop wallet. Then, when you're ready to spend your bitcoin or cash out, just install another wallet on your PC, and put in your private key. Wam bam, your coins show up in the wallet and you can transfer it.
Rillwill (4 months ago)
I followed your instructions to store 50 bitcoin in 2014 I forgot about the bitcoins and now my multibit doesn't work.. wtf dude help
LampOfMagic (5 months ago)
thanks for the video really helped. but i have some questions. where is the blockchain? where do i access it? how does the program create a bitcoin address? where is the blockchain when i own a wallet?
David Edwards 12661 (4 months ago)
THE BLOCK CHAINS THAT CREATE BITCOIN )MINE BITCOINS) ARE THE MINER SOFTWARES THAT YOU DOWNLOAD ON YOUR PC , JUST SEARCH MINER FOR BIT COIN , ETHEREUM , ETC. , THIS PROGRAM DOES NOT CREATE THE BITCOIN , BUT THE WHOLE SYSTEM THIS PROGRAM IS CONNECTED TO , THE WHOLE WEB IT IS WOULD REWARD THIS PROGRAM WITH BITCOINS BASED ON HOW MUCH PROCESSING POWER YOU`VE LENT TO THE GOOD OF THE SYSTEM , DEMOCRACY .

If you added coin to your wallet when you're offline, how does a website know how much bitcoin is in it?!?! This stuff is difficult to understand.
diamondheat9 (6 months ago)
MrLovethyneighbor correct.
MrLovethyneighbor (6 months ago)
Sorry I new at this and am trying to understand. Instead of like a bank account having 1 routing and checking number to send and receive funds, Crypto has 2? 1 for receiving which is the public key, and 1 for sending out of the wallet which is the private key, correct?
diamondheat9 (6 months ago)
MrLovethyneighbor no. You are given what is called a public address and a private address. The private address or key is what is used to take money from the wallet and the public address(keys) are used to send currency to the wallet and don't expose your private address(key). Also, a private key is a longer string address compared to your public address.
MrLovethyneighbor (6 months ago)
diamondheat9 so what you are saying is that all of your coin is stored online and the only way it can be hacked is if the hacker can get their hands on the private keys? But aren't the private keys made public when you give someone who wants to pay you one of the addresses?!
diamondheat9 (6 months ago)
DjZephy you don't send BTC offline. What you do offline is create a wallet private/5 public keys that will point to a free wallet address on the blockchain(online) all the USB does is store your private key to get your btc out. Btc is always online but the address to point to your btc wallet is what is stored offline in your USB stick.

cleaner1984 (6 months ago)
How can funds be transferred so quickly between the Coinbase account and paper wallet? Or between a paper wallet and other wallets? I thought it was taking some time before the transaction could be recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain. Does that mean that these transactions are so quick because they are nor recorded on the blockchain? In that case, how can we prove we own bitcoins?
Rochelle Douglass (6 months ago)
Thank you very informative! And I especially love the way you take time to explain everything. I'm older and very inexperienced in all of this, so it makes it much easier to listen to someone like yourself. Thanks again, Rochelle
Rochelle Douglass (6 months ago)
What do you mean? Is his video info false?
marzer lacindameda (6 months ago)
Absolutely not and this is incorrect
cleaner1984 (6 months ago)
So basically, MultiBit is creating a wallet and giving you a private key. Then, potentially, what could prevent developers/people working at Multibit to know and use your private key and have access to your wallet?
Tomek Samcik (6 months ago)
but isn't the wallet just a client to connect to these public addresses, it doesn't matter where it's installed, all the data is in the blockchain, the only thing that it stores really are these hashcodes
Michel Serra (6 months ago)
hi from venezuela what is the minimum capacity usb that i cant use for this? i hope i explain well. thank you.

so what happens if multibit goes bankrupt or seizes to exist? will the usb wallet still work? isnt the coin technically stored on the web? and the usb is merely the key to access the fund? also why didnt he use the first public address that was given? why did he generate 5 additional addresses?

Multibit is No Longer Supported Dear Bitcoin Community, It is time for us to let Multibit go. The reality is that Multibit is in need of a lot of work. It has stubborn bugs that have caused us and Multibit users much grief. Additionally, Bitcoin has gone through a fundamental change in regards to the way fees work. The addition of SegWit in the coming weeks will mean the Multibit software has fallen still further behind. Unfortunately, KeepKey simply does not have the resources to support the current issues, nor to rebuild Multibit to ensure ideal user experience. By focusing our attention on the KeepKey device, we will continue building and improving the best hardware wallet available. Thus, KeepKey will discontinue support and maintenance of Multibit, effective immediately. We recommend that all Multibit users discontinue using it and you move your keys to other wallet software of your choosing. We wrote a blog post describes some options of your options in more detail. Multibit was a fantastic piece of software in its time, and we want to thank the Multibit developers for such an important contribution to Bitcoin's history. Sincerely, Ken Hodler Chief Technical Officer KeepKey

Question: 1. Regardless of the address that you use, all cryptos that you send will be sent to the same place. Is this correct? 2. Would it be safe to have these addresses written down in a document on your computer? Can the address provide a way for you to be hacked?
Marco Spinola (7 months ago)
So what happens if the USB key dies, or stop functioning like I have had several keys defective stop working out of the blue? Is money gone or I will have to pay thousands of dollars to recover hundreds of dollars?

i suggest everyone make about 5 or 6 backups because usb sticks do eventually fail and sometimes you can't recover anything that was on them.

How to become bitcoin trader? Exactly like Bitcoin, multiple digital currencies exist in the marketplace. So if you prefer to buy a few other currencies which aren`t available on Indian Exchange than you can utilize Bittrex. All you have to do is locate an exchange that you favor. Cryptocurrency exchanges have a massive potential to modify peoples minds and opinions concerning cryptocurrencies generally speaking and their application in actual life. So even in the event the exchange is attacked, its still true that you have your money. Furthermore, the exchanges prepare each and every industry for Bitcoin expansion. Existing stock exchanges will also compete to be able to fulfill the users configuration requirements. Sooner or later later on, the prices will grow more equal, meeting somewhere in the middleyour profit is equivalent to the quantity of convergence. No matter how far it is from Kijun, it is likely to return and test that level at some point. The amount of bitcoin is perpetually changing. In the US, it is 1000 USD. Whats even better, seek the services of a seasoned lawyer or at least ask for an in depth consultation. So youve read the newspaper about the meteoric growth of crypto currencies including Bitcoin or Ripple. Then coming up with 1000s of exchange rates simply to go out and get groceries is nearly impossible. Many cities around the world provide a bitcoin ATM where you are able to trade cash for bitcoin. The cryptocurrency world isn`t efficient.
